OMRON Variable Speed Drives and Electronic Displays go green

The European Union aims to achieve a market of sustainable, climate-neutral and resource-efficient products. To improve the environmental performance of products, the most effective actions must be taken already at the design phase. The Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC establishes a framework for the setting of Ecodesign requirements for energy-related products.

Every five years the European Commission focuses on certain product categories and new product-specific regulations are adopted, laying down Ecodesign requirements dedicated to a defined product type. At OMRON we constantly monitor the developments and take the necessary actions. Find out how OMRON Ecodesign compliant products help customers to get the most from streamlined environmental performances.

Variable Speed Drives (VSD)

In the past, the Ecodesign Directive was addressing motors only, but the Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 extends the scope to include also the Variable Speed Drives: in fact, from the 1st of July 2021, a new obligation requires the minimum classification of the Variable Speed Drives (VSD) according to the International Energy Efficiency class IE2, which defines the maximum power losses of the device. We have made the efficiency data available on our website, and the losses had been determined in accordance with the standard IEC 61800-9.  Please note that the regulation is not applicable to single-phase VSDs and to regenerative drives.

We confirm that all of our products already comply with the requirement of being classified according to the Energy Efficiency class IE2. Please always refer to our dedicated Ecodesign web-page for the latest efficiency data.

Electronics Displays

The Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/2021 also lays down Ecodesign requirements for Electronic Displays, which from 1st of March 2021 not only aim to improve the material efficiency of the products but also to ease the recycling at the end of life.

The main requirements include marking of certain plastic components according to the type of polymer; utilizing halogen-free material for plastic stand and enclosure; adding the cadmium-free (or cadmium inside) logo; and providing the End of Life manual, with dismantling information. OMRON products in the scope of the regulation accomplish these requirements.

Please refer to our Ecodesign Directive page to download the efficiency data and to find out more about the products in scope of the directive.
